Be nice to a newb today

A long time RL friend of Rekrsiv (Let’s call him K) has returned to the game last week, and this weekend he came to our place and we ran some dungeons together. It was only the three of us, him on his warlock, Rek dual-boxing his resto and guardian druids, and me dual-boxing my hunters.

K’s favourite class is warlock. Since he hasn’t played in over a year, he came back to a class that didn’t feel very familiar. Rek’s main being a warlock, he helped him figure out his rotation, what the hell were those weird burning embers, and how to pick his talents. We then queue’d for cataclysm random dungeon. Rek and I had to turn off our xp at some point because we out leveled K after one or two dungeons. (RaF gives a 300% increased xp when both linked accounts play together.) At the end of the evening though, Rek and I both got our characters to 85 while K got to 83.

While we were doing Blackrock Cavern, I explained the fights to K as we went along, and he was doing fine. He even managed to not stand in bad too much. I looked at his screen and realized something was missing. I asked K if he was doing the quest and he said he wasn’t. It annoyed me for a second, then I realized that he simply didn’t have the same reflexes that a more experienced player has, which is completely normal. Everything to him was new. It’s easy to forget how huge the world of Warcraft is, how there is a ton of stuff to remember, and how hard it is at the beginning to grasp concepts that to us, veteran players, are completely obvious. It was a good reminder to be patient with people that tend to annoy me normally. It’s not that they are bad, they are just new to all this. I can’t expect them to have the same knowledge I have of the game. I’m sure I’m not the only one who does this, who forgets how overwhelming it was at the very beginning. I got lost at the Northshire Abbey for crying out loud. It’s other player’s patience and guidance that made me the player I am today. So if you can relate to this, try to be nice to a newb once in a while. It’s not always easy, (at least for me, but maybe I’m a horrible person) but it’s worth a try.
